Once again I made the trip to Wilmington to attend one of the great tournaments we have in this state. The tournaments in Wilmington are ones I never want to miss, because they are just flat out fun. Charlie Hauser always makes sure there are plenty of things going on besides the tournament to keep everyone having a ball. And he and I agree that it's all in the details when it comes to putting on a great event. From the horse "hat" that we use to pull out picks for the Kentucky Derby to the smiley pencils for the referees, no detail is left out. The hospitality is always continuous, and the competition is fierce.

The big story in the Men's Open singles was Jonathan Justice's run to the finals. Jonathan has been playing racquetball in NC since he was knee high to a grasshopper.  He always attended the tournaments with his dad, Al, who has been playing tournaments for many years in NC. Jonathan played in the State Singles this year, but was sick, and didn't make much of a showing. He was healthy for this tournament though, and took out the # 2 seed, Brent Walters in the quarters and then the #3 seed, Chris Thomas, in the semis. But his Cinderella run ended in the finals when he met veteran player Travis Aldinger from PA. Travis has won many of the WAC tournaments, and just overwhelmed Jonathan by completely controlling center court.

After a tough day of racquetball on Saturday, the players had a chance to unwind by the pool on Saturday night with the pay for view boxing match that had been hyped by all the sports networks for months, the Mayweather, Mosley bout. Charlie had the fight up on the big screen and it was a great finish to an exciting day.

If you've never attended a WAC tournament, then you have to plan to attend their event in November. It's a guaranteed good time, and you will have a chance to play some of the best players on the east coast. So make your plans now, so you're not left out of one of the best events in the state. The tournaments at the WAC always sell out, so make sure to enter early.

We have a lot of pictures of the event posted in our Photo gallery, so make sure to check them out. The completed draws link for the tournament is posted below.
